Money management for kids is an idea that has just started to spread amongst responsible parents who would like their children to learn from history’s mistakes and turn this knowledge into their own benefit.
Nowadays, it’s clear in many parents’ eyes that financial intelligence and financial education are so important that both should be taught to their kids even at school. Careless spending, unawareness of how the economy works and a serious lack of knowledge about credits and loans have all played a big part in the events that lead to the current recession. In order for future generations to avoid the same mistakes, it seems like a very important cause to teach money management for kids.
The younger one starts to hear about money management principles, ideas, strategies and tips, the better. If our children receive a lot of education about these financial subjects in an early age, it means that they will have a much better chance to live in a superior future and lead a better life. But what can we do until money management for kids become an integral part of our education system? Here are a few ideas and methods that may help:
Instead of making the distribution of pocket money default every week, you should make your kids work for it. Obviously, you don’t want to excessively take advantage of them or make them do any kind of hard or unpleasant work, but you should come up with a few ideas to help them get to know what it feels like to achieve something by putting in your own efforts. It would be fantastic if they learned at a very young age that money equals only the amount of time and work that was put in.
Another thing you could teach your children is savings. You could talk to them about money management and how they should control their spending and saving in light of their needs, wants and desires. If they learn these money management basics right, it can prove to be an enormous head start for them when they grow up. This method can help them learn how to set goals, evaluate possibilities, create plans and reach those dreams later by committing to something and sticking to it.
Finally, by far the best thing you can do to teach money management for kids is to set a good example yourself. If your children see yourself as a responsible and financially educated person, they will naturally learn to think about their finances as you do. Remember, you’re the biggest influence in their life: don’t miss out on this chance to teach them something so important.
